Hello all. Am thrilled to find this site. I am hoping to find some additional information about my family line.

Abraham O.

John M.

Joseph R married Ann E. Freed, Issue;

John M.

Eva

Fannie

Walter who married Nellie H. Hill, my family line

Donald DeReed.

What I have found has been from the Ancestry.com site and from Googling the Stauffer name. I don't know about Abraham's parents. Hopefully someone somewhere has a posted tree that I could view.

Thank you very much

Hi, Jean -

I'm fairly new to this forum myself, and, like you, am thrilled to find this site.  One resource that was suggested to me was MennoSearch.com, where Richard Davis has compiled a wealth of information about Stauffer and other Mennonite genealogy.  His site is a pay-site, however, but a few of us have purchased his materials.  I have found that others are very willing to share information with me, so I will pass along the karma when I can.

Can you be a little more specific about Abraham O. Stauffer?  There is one who is referenced in Davis' book, who was born in 1841; his father was Christian (b. Dec. 1808) and his mother was Susan Overholt (born c.1840).  There isn't any downstream information about this Abraham, but there's plenty upstream.

While he is the only "Abraham O." , there are about a hundred other Abrahams.  If you have any other information, post it and I'll see if I can look it up for you.

This Abraham O. looks like the same as mine.

In Along the Banks of Jacobs Creek, Winifred Paul documents that Abraham O. had a son John M. John M. had a son Joseph R. who married Ann Eliza Freed. Karen Critchfield's site has information on John M., too.

Note: At Mennosearch.com, Richard Davis has research notes about Fayette county, PA Stauffers.

Hi Jean,

I'm also a descendant of Abraham O. Stauffer.  I also have my info from Along the Banks of Jacobs Creek, which Karen cited, but I will add a bit more from that source:  John M. Stauffer was a distiller and grist mill operator; grist mill located across Dexter Rd. from the house.  His wife Katrina lived on the farm until she died.  Abraham O. Stauffer's father was Rev. Abraham Stauffer (1752-1826)--this is the Rev. Abraham (son of Christian) mentioned in in a previous post of mine on this site, when I asked about Christian's parents and Ron was kind enough to check MennoSearch for me.  As for my descent from Abraham O. Stauffer and Elizabeth Myers, as you say, their daughter Nancy Stauffer (9 Feb. 1808-19 June 1900) married Rev. Martin Loucks (9 Dec. 1798-7 Nov. 1869).  Martin was a Mennonite minister.  Their eight children were (* denotes my line):

 1.    Elizabeth Loucks (9 Apr 1827-14 Sept. 1877), married David F. Stoner.

  2.   *Jacob S. Loucks (10 Oct. 1829-21 Dec. 1916), married Mary Saylor.  Eleven children:  Joseph R. married Martha Stoner, Martin unmarried, Davis S. married Nellie Newcomer, *Abram R. married Henrietta (Nettie) Brown, Aaron married 1. Amelia Medsgar 2. Sadie Saylor, John R. married Annie Rittenhouse, George S. married Malinda E. Davis, Norman died age 2, infant died, Ada married A. D. Martin, and Cora married C. A. Brilhart.

                 *Abram R. Loucks (8 Jan. 1862-25 Nov. 1952) + Henrietta Brown (26 Feb. 1863-14 Nov. 1942).  Four children:

Lydia Pearl Loucks (4 June 1892-11 March 1999), married Edward L. Schwartz.  Child:  Kenneth L. Schwartz.

*Edwin Earl Loucks (15 Sept. 1893-11 Sept. 1959), married Vera Deniker.  Child: *Edwin Earl Loucks (19 Dec. 1923-20 Dec. 1982), married May Ellen Slocum.  (E. Earl Loucks and Mary Ellen Slocum are my parents.)

Mary Blanche Loucks (13 April 1895-16 Nov. 1990), married Homer William Momeyer.  Three children: Virginia Blanche Momeyer, William Abram Momeyer, Esther E. Momeyer.

James Frederick Loucks (4 Nov. 1906-    ), married Grace E. Tarr.  Child: James Kenneth Loucks.

3.     Anna Loucks (29 Nov. 1831-1 Jan. 1922), unmarried.

4.     Catharine Loucks (23 Oct. 1834-19 Nov. 1887), unmarried.

5.     Abraham S. Loucks (12 Apr. 1838-2. Apr. 1924), married Charlotte Ager.

6.     Peter S. Loucks (3 May 1841-6 Nov. 1897), married Mary A. Boyd.

7.     Martin S. Loucks (2 July 1843-    )

8.     John S. Loucks (14 Sept. 1848-27 July 1925), unmarried.

The info on descendants of Nancy Stauffer and Rev. Martin Loucks is from Peter Loucks and Anna Overholt Loucks...1670-2004 compiled by Edna M. Lewis Loux, and from my own family documents.  For anyone who wants exhaustive info, Edna Loux's book contains much more on the descendants of all of Nancy and Rev. Martin's children, and also on the descendants of John W. Stauffer (1788-1852, brother of Abraham O. Stauffer) who married Catherine Loucks (1793-1871, sister of Rev. Martin Loucks).

Just noticed a typo in my previous post, which I have now corrected--the death date for Nancy Stauffer Loucks is 19 June 1900 (as Jean has it in her post), not 11 June 1900.  Sorry for my mistake.  Here is a quote about Nancy from The Mennonites of Westmoreland Co., PA by Edward Yoder:  "Nancy Loucks, aged widow of Preacher Martin Loucks, was deeply interested in a renewed growth for the Mennonite congregation, and she did much in the way of encouraging her grandchildren to become Christians and unite with the church of their ancestors.  She lived to see several of her grandsons become the leaders of the congregation."

Did you know there is a photo of Katrina Sherrick Stauffer (wife of John M. Stauffer) and Nancy Stauffer Loucks online at www.familyoldphotos.com/pa/2l/loucks_family.htm posted by Thomas Ridenour? Marilyn Loucks Hooper has identified some of the other people in the photo as Nancy's children:  in the top row the two in the center are John Loucks and Anna Loucks; bottom row left to right Elizabeth (Betsy) Loucks Stoner, Nancy Stauffer Loucks, Katrina Sherrick Stauffer, and Catharine (Katie) Loucks.  Tom Ridenour has also posted many other family photos on this site--take a look!

Her age is  14. I have looked and looked but to no avail. I can not find her anymore. I am hoping someone might read this and might be in the position to do some footwork in the PA area and continue the search for her. Since her family was very well off she was probably kept in a special hospital or home. I do have a picture of this family including Marjorie.

Hello, Jean!

Maybe I can help you with this query, or at least point you in some good directions.

My GeoCities web site has some data on the Overholt-Stauffer connections.  Your Abraham O. Stauffer appears to be Abraham Overholt Stauffer, who is identified in Winifred Erb Paul's Along the Banks of Jacobs Creek as St 16 (see below). Beginning with the Abraham Stauffer many of us are trying to properly connect back to the greater Stauffer family tree. Not only are there many Abrahams, there are many different Christians, too. The alph-numeric system reflects Winifred's corrections. Additional material was found in a newspaper article, "J. R. Stauffer Dies Aged 74," that appears on my web site -- thanks to Thomas Ridenour, who collaborated on my feature, Our Stauffer Cousins.

(pp. 103-107)  St1 Abraham Stauffer (ca 1752-3 Sep 1826), son of Christian Stauffer & Barbara Fellman; m. Anna Nissley (20 Sep 1752-1817); nine children: St11 Barbara, St12 Anna, St13 Christian, St14 Martin, St15 Francis (Fannie), St16 Abraham O., St17 John W., St18 Maria, St19 Elizabeth.

St16 Abraham O. Stauffer (1786-1853) m. Elizabeth Myers (1782-1878); six children: St161 Nancy, St162 Mary (Polly), St163 John M., St164 Martin B., St165 Abraham Jr., St166 Elizabeth.

St163 John M. Stauffer (1813-1862) m. Sher112 Katrina (aka Catherine) Sherrick (1812-1887); seven children: [These children have two different designations -- Stauffer and Sherrick -- but I will use the Stauffer notation.]  St1631 Jacob S., St1632 Joseph R (J.R.), St1633 Abraham [originally S. for Sherrick, but dropped] K. [for Katrina added] (A.K.), St1634 Barbara Ann, St1635 Elizabeth, St1636 infant son, St1637 Sarah.

St1632 Joseph R. (J.R.) Stauffer (1836-1910) m. Ann Eliza Freed (1842-1891), d. John Freed & Frances Robinsonfive children: St16321 John M., St16322 Eva, St16323 Fannie, St16324 Walter Freed, St16325 (Donald?) DeRead.

St16324 Walter Freed (xxxx-xxxx) m. Nellie (P.?) H. Hill (xxxx-xxxx), d. John D. Hill & Emma Long; # children?:  names?

I added the data you gave, but cannot go further.  I see that you have Nellie's initial as H., not P., and I must make a correction in the newspaper article I mentioned, because I made bold the name Walter R. Stauffer.  Obviously, there was Walter F. (for Freed) Stauffer, who was in banking and manufacturing.  The article mentions DeRead Stauffer, but you give him as Donald DeRead Stauffer.  I am always willing to bow to an expert!

You are cordially invited to see the few features I have regarding the Stauffer line at The Overholt Family Tree ~~ Karen's Branches.2 : http://www.geocities.com/kroverholtcritchfield/ .  Bye, for now!

Hi Jean;

Here is some more information for an Abraham O.Stauffer

The Upper Milford Mennonite Cemetery in Zionsville, PA is the final resting place of over 50 Stauffers.  Most if not all of these Stauffers are descended from the Hans Stauffer who arrived here in 1710, specifically from Han's grandson Daniel, the son of Han's son Daniel.  I have a copy of the internment list for this cemetery.  Two Abraham Stauffers are buried here.

According to the tombstone inscriptions, one of the Abrahams was born 27 Feb 1759 and died 1 Aug 1822.  (A secondary stone shows him as a Pvt in the 2nd CO 1st Batt of the PA Militia during the Revolution, but most Mennonites, although they were on the muster roles, refused to serve and paid fines).  The next grave is Eva nee Oberyl, born 7 Dec 1766 and died 11 Apr 1843.  All 4 of these dates match the information provided by Richard Warren Davis in his research on mennosearch.com for an Abraham and Eva, except Richard says his wife's maiden name was Oberholtzer, daughter of Jacob and Esther (Bleim) Oberhotlzer.  He shows this Abraham as the son of Han's grandson Daniel and says that Daniel's land was divided upon his death between Abraham and his brother Jacob (I am descended from Jacob.).  Richard found orphan court records in Bucks County dated 10 Oct 1822 that show Abraham died leaving a widow, Eve and seven children; Abraham, Elizabeth, Jacob, Henry, Hester, Susanna and Samuel.

For Abraham's son Abraham, Richard says the following:

"Abraham Stauffer, b. 22 Oct 1797. d. 1 Oct 1860. He was buried at the Upper
Milford Mennonite Cemetery in Lehigh County. He married Maria Schleiffer (b. 25 Apr 1797).
He was living at Upper Milford Township next to his brother Henry in 1830, age 30-40 with his
wife age 30-40, 2 sons age 0-5, 1 son, age 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 2 daughters age 0-5 and one
female age 20-30, He was living at Upper Milford Township in 1840. He was living at Upper
Milford in 1850, age 52 a farmer with real estate worth $2,000 with his wife Maria, age 53 and
his children and a Hannah Stauffer, age 22. On 10 Feb 1823 he had his father’s land in Lehigh
County."

This is consistant with the other Abraham's tombstone and with the one next to his for his wife Maria.

Richard lists 6 children for Abraham and Maria: Joseph Stauffer, b. 22 Feb 1822; Susanna Stauffer, b. 5 Sep 1823; Elizabeth Stauffer, b. 8 Feb 1825; John Stauffer, b. 3 Feb 1827; Enos Stauffer, b. 14 May 1829; and Abraham Stauffer, b. 8 Jan 1832. While Richard provides no details for descendents of any of these children, the tombstone inscriptions show a John S Stauffer born 3 Feb 1827 and died 28 Feb 1889.  His wife Hanah Strunk is buried next to him, born 22 Nov 1827 and died 27 Sep 1887.

Perhaps this  is of some help to you.
