[REPOST: for Karen Moorhead]

All I know about Daniel is that he was born 21 Jan 1832 in PA d 3 Mar 1897
Bullskin Twp., Fayette Co., PA m Christina

Also He is supposed to be buried Mt. Salem U Brethern Cemetery Fayette Co.,
This cemetery is said to be also Knopsnyder. It is beside the Salem Church
and called Salem Cemetery. It was on Stouffer land years ago. Source states:
STAUFFER, Daniel GAR 21 Jan 1832 -3 Mar 1897.

In Stouffer Cem. there is a Daniel b 1-21-1832 d 3-3-1897. He was Garrison
Commissary Sgt.16th Reg. PA Cav. He was 5'10" tall, brown eyes, dark hair
and fair complexion. Discharged 8-22-1865 Honorably. Lived in Scottdale and
in 1890 was in Pennsville. Recorded in Daniel's service record is a
statement from Jeremiah Stouffer that he had down Daniel for 36 years. This
was in 1886.( Maybe this is the person my Jerry B. was named after. He was b
in 1869, 5th of 6th children. He was the only male I know of.

To find this cemetery turn onto RT 982 off of Rt 119 North of Connellsville.
Go to Wooddale turn right onto Ore Mine Rd. Go to second stop sign (about 5
miles) Cemetery and church on left. The name of the Church is Mt. Salem
United Methodist Church. A sign on a tree entrance of cemetery reads
STOUFFER CEMETERY. Please note different spellings re: Stouffer -- Stauffer
and Keefer -- Keifer. Spellings as on stones.

Source above states: STAUFFER, Daniel 1-21-1832 --- 3-3-1897 Co. M SGT. 16th
Regt PA Cav Civil War

Information obtained from the book History of Fayette Co., PA with
Biographical Sketches of many of its Pioneers and Prominent Men Edited by
Franklin Ellis, pages 224-228 states: Daniel Stauffer, must. in Sept. 23,
1862 as a Private in the Fayette Co. Members of the 16th Cavalry, Company B
during the War of the Rebellion.

Does this match up with any info you have? I really appreciate any help you
could give.

Apparently there were Stauffers in the Scottdale area who were not descendants of Rev. Abraham Stauffer.  They are mentioned in Along the Banks of Jacobs Creek in the chapter on the Fretz/Fretts family; info given is sketchy--there is a Daniel Stauffer in this line but seems not to be your Daniel.  For what it's worth, here is the info:  Anna Fretz (1799-1850) married Samuel Stauffer, "son of John and Barbara Stauffer who came fron Northampton Co., PA to Fayette Co."  Samuel died June 1819 by drowning in the Yough River when his only child was 6 weeks old.  When Samuel Stauffer died, Anna and her child went back to live with the Fretz family--that child was John F. Stauffer (11 May 1819-1897), who married Catherine Monosmith (1829-1888).  John F. Stauffer had 9 children:  Annie, Samuel, Elizabeth married M. G. Potter, John M., Daniel M. married Barbara E. Saylor (niece of my g-g-grandmother Mary Saylor Loucks), Catharine married Jordon N. Stoner, Eli married Flora  Sherrick, Ada married Thomas W. Porter, and Martin.  The Mennonites of Westmoreland Co. mentions a John Stauffer "not related to the minister Abraham Stauffer...probably a son-in-law of the John Shank who six years later bought land in the adjoining township of Bullskin.  Shank came here from Hagerstown, MD and John Stauffer was evidently from the same place," and says in the 1790 US census John Stauffer is given as head of a family of 8 persons in Tyrone Tnshp., Fayette Co.  Since the two sources disagree about where John Stauffer came from, it is unclear if they are talking about the same John Stauffer.

In a research report on Mennosearch.com, Richard Davis lists a Daniel Stauffer who was born in 1831 and who married Christina. In the 1860 census he was living in Bullskin Township, was 30 and his wife was 22.

Richard Davis lists a child Jeremiah Stauffer who was born in 1869.
